Students Shine at Show and Tell

 

 

 

Early Elementary students performed "The Seven Chinese Sisters", middle school students displayed their photography and sold beautiful art cards, and Plough Jogger and Mark Twain waited their turn on "The People Speak" circuit.

Exhibits inspire at Show and Tell

 

 

 

A variety of hands-on displays were showcased at this Winter's Show and Tell. Here students work with experiments in static electricity and computerized microscope.

The People Speak at Show and Tell

 

 

 

Middle School stduents presented an excellent oratory series for Show and Tell inspired by their studies of Howard Zinn's "A Young People's History of the United States". Here students speak the words of Chief Seattle, Sojourner Truth, and Fannie Lou Hamer.

LINK reports on Roman Emperors

At LINK this month I observed a high school freshman read a three page, single spaced, historical essay she had written in the voice of a Roman emperor. The report had depth and insight into character and the age in which the leader lived. The student extrapilated assumptions about what it meant to be categorized as "egomaniacal" and "violently driven towards domination" and framed these vis a vis historical facts about the neccesity of actual battles that took place and the outcomes of these beyond the field of war--noting the economic and cultural impact on the empire. She did all this in a toga with a plastic laurel wreath on her head. WTG LINK critical essayist!

Ulrike Greenway visits CCS

 

Marie-Louise Baker brought her friend and German Educational pioneer, Ulrike Greenway, to visit the Charter School this month. Ulrike was offered the position of Secretary of Education for the state of Germany, but declined the position to continue to focus on innovation and expansion of the school she founded and its educational ideas in Germany with sister schools in China. Ulrike spoke richly of her passion about student self-direction and self-motivation, and questions of how this really works and what are the best and most inspired ways to create a learning environment that directly supports student self-motivation? Ulrike and her husband have been part of the Crestone community since the 1970's, making home both here and in Germany. It is such a privilege to participate in spontaneous conversations such as these about Philosophy of Education with scholars and activist of depth and committment like Ulrike Greenway here on "T" road. These are the living Conversations that continue themselves in many conversations elsewhere.

Scott Swordy works with LINK student on video project, filming the World flag on the elementary campus on a snowy day. Bill Roberts, visiting theatre artist, works with Middle School students on speeches including oratory from Sitting Bull, Sojourner Truth, and Dr. Martin Luther King.

LINK students prepare for Show and Tell

I stopped by LINK yesterday afternoon at day's end and was treated to a Scott Joplin concert and great conversation while students continued beadwork on their masks for Show and Tell performances.
